Unit 2: Research and Exposition
Culminating Task: A Research Report
Common Core Standards Addressed:
• W.8.7. Conduct short research projects to answer a question (including a self-generated question), drawing on several sources and generating additional related, focused questions that allow for multiple avenues of exploration.
• W.8.8. Gather relevant information from multiple print and digital sources, using search terms effectively; assess the credibility and accuracy of each source; and quote or paraphrase the data and conclusions of others while avoiding plagiarism and following a standard format for citation.
• W.8.9. Draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research.
Objectives:
· To read about how different technology affect our lives today
· To determine which teacher-approved topics you want to explore and research
· To read expository articles about how certain technology affects our lives
· To annotate expository text and take notes
· To identify important information from the article that answers specific research questions
· To paraphrase and analyze significant quotes
· To write a research report that includes: Introduction, Key Findings and Analysis, Conclusion and Recommendation, Bibliography
The Three Big Research areas you need to address in your report:
1) What are some reasons why researchers are doing this type of research? (What questions are scientists looking to answer? What current problems are researchers hoping to solve through their research? How will learning more about this area of science help humans?)
2) What are some discoveries made by scientists within the past five years in this area of research? (Names, dates, locations? What was discovered including facts and statistics?)
3) What research is being done right now, by whom, and where? (Names, locations, details of what they are doing)
Student Activities:
Choose a Topic: As a class, we have read one article about each of the four topics listed below. Decide which topic interested you the most and that you would like to explore further.
oTopic A: How technology like text messaging, video games, and social media positively and negatively affect academic achievement.
oTopic B: How iPods and MP3 players can affect hearing and teen behavior
oTopic C: How iPads can positively and negatively affect our lives
oTopic D: How the Nintendo Wii helps people exercise and its limitations
Read and take notes on the articles: Once you have decided on your research topic, simply click on the links listed under that topic or type the website address on your web browser. Each link will take you to an article about your topic.
